Interview with @hendrae

@hendrae

We are big fans of minimalism. There are some incredible minimalist photographers on Instagram and @hendrae is one of our favourites – his compositions have a real sense of fun. He’s been selected twice to be a suggested user by @instagram and has built a loyal following within the community.

We recently caught up with him to find out a little more about him and his Instagramming.

When did you join Instagram and why?

I joined Instagram in early 2013 because it was one of the social media platforms that was trending in my area. My friends and various people I know were using it, so I just downloaded it. I think it’s cool when you can capture and share any moments to keep it on the platform.

What equipment do you use to shoot?

Mostly I use an iPhone 5 and sometimes a Fujifilm X-M1.

What do you use to edit your photos?

I use VSCOApp, Snapseed, and Photoshop Fix.

What is your favourite shot that you’ve published on Instagram?

All of them are my favourite (haha!) but here are some that I particularly like:

Has Instagram changed your approach to photography & if so how?

It has. At first I did not focus on a single style – there are so many inspiring instagrammers and photography styles on Instagram, but the minimalist style interests me the most!

What inspires you?

I think everything can inspire me. I usually look for ideas on various social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest and Google. There are so many photographers in the Instagram community that inspire me.

Who are your favourite Instagrammers?

How do you promote your work?

Through Instagram only, but I am considering starting my own blog so I can promote more of my work.

To what do you attribute your success on Instagram?

For me Instagram is for fun, to gain experience and improve my skills in photography, for making friends and exploring new things.

What do you do for a living outside of Instagram?

I’m a freelance photographer and working with small businesses.

What advice would you give to Instagram newbies?

Find your passion, be who you are, and enjoy gramming!

Interview with @chee.yip

Chee Yip’s photography first caught our eye back in 2014 with his amazing, vertigo-inducing shots of Hong Kong and beautiful scenes of Georgian Bath (home to Printrbook HQ).

So we were delighted to be able to meet him at an Instagram exhibition being held in late 2015 at the Forum Coffee House in Bath. He was one of a few young, talented Instagrammers exhibiting their latest work – entrepreneurial, gifted photographers sharing their creative passion.

We recently caught up with Chee again to find out a little more about him and his Instagramming.

When did you join Instagram and why?

I joined Instagram in 2012 when I bought my iPhone 5 for social use and I saw other users upload photos and I thought to do the same to see what people react to my photo.

What equipment do you use to shoot?

I’m currently still using my Nikon D90 from 2011 and iPhone 6 Plus.

What do you use to edit your photos?

I tend to use Lightroom for my SLR shots, Snapseed and VSCOcam for my iPhone.

What is your favourite shot that you’ve published on Instagram?

Hong Kong

#ThroughMyOlloclip

My #WHPresolutions2015 is to learn how to use my Pentacon Six

Has Instagram changed your approach to photography & if so how?

I would say Instagram has changed my approach, my sense of style has changed since I first used the app. Meeting other Instagrammers brings a network of a community to share the same expression of passion. I also created the hashtag #ThroughMyOlloclip to see what other Instagrammers in the world showcase from their own perspective.

What inspires you?

For me, there’s quite a few things that inspire me. Different photos, quotes and life experience has helped me give me ideas to create and capture the right moment.

Who are your favourite Instagrammers?

@jayscale, @diaryofalex, @ericluis

What is your favourite shot of theirs?

How do you promote your work?

I normally use hashtags to showcase a wider audience than my followers and network with other Instagrammers!

To what do you attribute your success on Instagram?

To keep focus and never stop trying what I know best, sometimes I think outside the box (outside my comfort zone) but I always experiment what I have brought with me on my exploration.

What do you do for a living outside of Instagram?

I’m a full time student studying Business Management.

What advice would you give to Instagram newbies?

Never stop trying until you found your style and it’s not always about the equipment you have, its the person behind the lens what counts!

Interview with Chaity and Riley the Parson Spokesdoggy

If you’ve not yet discovered the wonderful, fun photography of @ichaity yet you’re in for a real treat.

We first met Chaity when we collaborated on a project she was running to promote good dental health in pets – with Riley (her Parson Jack Russell) helping out! As part of that project we published the #ourpearlywhites Instagram photo book (with proceeds going to charity) which featured some of the 2,000 pets whose owners took part in the campaign.

Riley is a Parson French Canadian dog, and is now famous within the Instagram pet community. He is the spokesdoggy for several campaigns and, of course, a handsome part-time model for Chaity.

We chatted to Chaity to find out more about her and her beloved Riley.

When did you join Instagram and why?

I joined Instagram a few years ago, shortly after I was diagnosed with my chronic illness. It started as a hobby but quickly became a routine that keeps me busy while I recover. My dog, Riley, has been a blessing in keeping me active throughout my recovery.

What equipment do you use to shoot?

A regular point-and-shoot camera is what I use. The important things are to constantly try to be creative with my environment and Riley. Those parts keep it fun and interesting for me.

What do you use to edit your photos?

Natural sunlight is key for me to get sharpness and brightness in my photos. I also play around with the settings on the camera to experiment. As for editing, there are a number of tools out there but the Instagram app has some good ones.

What is your favourite shot that you’ve published on Instagram?

It’s tough to pick one but the one of Riley lying on his Harry Barker black & white stripe bed always does it for me. It’s fun, I love the contrast and he just looks so darn cute with that smile. It also feels sweeter because it was a difficult shoot. Placing the products, my back aching, but it was worth it.

Riley the Spokesdoggy

Has Instagram changed your approach to photography & if so how?

I knew nothing of photography before I started Instagram. You “point and shoot” as far as I was concerned. Experience has taught that so much more is involved. Plus, I had to come up tricks to get my dog to pose.

What inspires you?

There’s no shortage of inspiration with my husband, family and friends giving me support. Also, my hometown of Montreal has a great art scene.

Who are your favourite Instagrammers?

One of my favourite Instagrammers is @joselourenco. Their work is simple, colourful, sharp and always a pleasure to have on my feed. I like the way they play with patterns and you can tell they have an eye for colour and photography.

What is your favourite shot of theirs?

My favourite capture of theirs is from the Instagram Weekend Hashstag projects featuring balloons (#whpballoons). It was crafty, creative and funny. All the things that I love.

My name is Cluckingram

How do you promote your work?

I promote my work through my gallery on Instagram or my website, ichaity.com. People usually find me when I am featured in popular galleries with a hashtag.

To what do you attribute your success on Instagram?

It’s got to be a combination of things. I tried a ton of different stuff before finding my style. Keeping consistency with that style is what I continuously work at now. Being able to show the softer side of Riley, since his breed is known for being energetic and stubborn. It’s a nice contrast to display his calm and happy attitude. I think it’s a refreshing surprise to people.

Coming up with projects and introducing them creatively helps as well. All this keeps me motivated to battle the challenges of having a chronic illness. Sharing this part of my life with people and hearing their stories of dealing with pain helps us inspire each other and face those challenges head on.

What do you do for a living outside of Instagram?

I am a former art director and also worked in programming, graphics design and marketing. I am currently recovering from my illness and cannot return to my career, but I have been able to utilize my experience to put them to good use in my gallery.

What advice would you give to Instagram newbies?

My advice, if you’ve just joined Instagram, is to never concern yourself with numbers of likes and followers. Do it because you enjoy it. Show your creative side, whatever it may be. Work hard and develop your own style. The success comes with time and patience.

laliouWhen it comes to stunning nature and landscape photography, there are few Instagram talents like @nala_rinaldo. We’ve long been fans of his wonderful ability to capture sumptuous light of far-off exotic places.

When did you join Instagram and why?

I joined Instagram about 3.5 years ago…because I loved taking pictures with my iPhone.

What equipment do you use to shoot?

I was only taking iphone shots until I reached 230,000 followers. Then I bought my first DSLR Canon 6D as a gift to myself for reaching the 200K mark! That was 2 years ago. The only other items of equipment I use are Gopro Hero 3+ & iPhone 5s.

What do you use to edit your photos?

For Instagram 99% of the time I only edit using Snapseed and sometimes Filterstorm. But for selling my photos I edit using Photoshop.

What is your favourite shot that you’ve published on Instagram?

Haha…what a silly question – how do I choose from my 1880 posts?!? Hahaha!

If I have to choose it would be one of these:
